Franklin County, located in south central Pennsylvania, is comprised of 15 townships and 7 boroughs. It encompasses 754 square miles and has an estimated population of 132,000. The county operates under an elected 3 member Board of Commissioners and provides many public services to ensure the health, safety and welfare of its residents. The county's roots are deeply embedded in the Commonwealth's history with its origins in the initial land grants provided by William Penn. Franklin County, named for Benjamin Franklin, was established on September 9, 1784. In that same year, the General Assembly named Chambersburg as the county seat and in 1795 the first courthouse was constructed. A statute of statue of Benjamin Franklin stands atop the courthouse.
